Churchill Downs begins its 11-day September meeting today, and Oaklawn Park-raced horses will have a heavy presence throughout opening weekend.
Hoonani Road, winner of the $100,000 Rainbow Stakes for 3-year-old Arkansas-bred colts and geldings on March 30 at Oaklawn, is entered in today's ninth race at Churchill Downs. Probable post time for the 7-furlong allowance race is 3:53 p.m.
Saturday's Grade 3 $100,000 Locust Grove Stakes features multiple Oaklawn stakes winner Streamline, who is scheduled to face eight rivals in the 1 1/16-mile race.
Trained by Brian Williamson, the consistent Streamline went through Oaklawn's four-race series of two-turn stakes races for older fillies and mares the last three years, highlighted by victories in the $100,000 Pippin in 2016, the Grade 2 $350,000 Azeri in 2017 and the Grade 3 $150,000 Bayakoa on Feb. 17.
Streamline has finished first, second or third in 21 of 26 lifetime starts and bankrolled $873,379 for breeder/co-owner Nancy Vanier, Williamson's mother-in-law.
Also entered in the Locust Grove are 2017 Oaklawn allowance winner Tiger Moth, third behind Streamline in the 2017 Azeri and fourth this year; Blue Prize, seventh in this year's Azeri; and 2017 Oaklawn maiden winners Dutch Parrot and Pinch Hit.
Blue Prize is the 2-1 program favorite. Probable post time for the Locust Grove, which goes as race 9, is 3:53 p.m.
Churchill's eighth race is the $100,000 Open Mind Stakes for female sprinters. Oaklawn-raced Vertical Oak, Our Majesty and Astrollinthepark are among seven entrants.
Vertical Oak is the 7-5 program favorite for perennial Oaklawn champions Ricardo Santana Jr. and Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen. Probable post time for the Open Mind is 3:21 p.m.
Oaklawn winners Three Chords (4-5) and Shannon C (8-5) are program favorites for the $30,000 Oklahoma Stallion Fillies Stakes and $30,000 Oklahoma Stallion Stakes, respectively, today at Remington Park in Oklahoma City. The 3-year-old races comprise the early daily double, with probable post times of 7:07 p.m. and 7:37 p.m.
Vexatious, third in the Grade 3 $400,000 Fantasy Stakes for 3-year-old fillies in 2017 at Oaklawn, is entered in the Grade 3 $300,000 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack in Canada. Probable post time for the 1 1/2-mile Northern Dancer, which goes as race 11, is 5:36 p.m.
Decorated Soldier, winner of Oaklawn's $150,000 Northern Spur Stakes for 3-year-olds in 2016, is the 3-1 program favorite for the $200,000 Presque Isle Mile Stakes Sunday at Presque Isle Downs in Erie, Penn., for Norman McKnight, Oaklawn's co-seventh-leading trainer in his 2018 debut.
Among several home-run claims for McKnight at Oaklawn -- the gelding was taken for $20,000 April 13 -- Decorated Soldier exits a victory in the Grade 3 $130,250 Seagram Cup Stakes on Aug. 12 at Woodbine. Decorated Soldier remains on a synthetic surface for the Presque Isle Mile, which goes as race 6 and has a probable post time of 6:30 p.m. Also entered is Matrooh, a multiple winner this year at Oaklawn.
Oaklawn-raced Hotshot Anna is entered in the Grade 2 $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes for female sprinters on Monday at Presque Isle Downs. Probable post time for the 6 1/2-furlong Masters, which goes as race 6, is 6:40 p.m.
Two Oaklawn-raced horses placed second in their races on Wednesday. Princess Warrior finished second in the $300,000 Dueling Grounds Oaks Wednesday at Kentucky Downs. The 1 5/16-mile grass race was postponed from Sunday because of rain. Operation Stevie, a multiple winner at the 2018 Oaklawn meeting, finished second in the $100,000 Brickyard Stakes Wednesday at Indiana Grand.
Red Ruby, winner of Oaklawn's $125,000 Martha Washington Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Feb. 10, returned to the work tab Friday at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., covering a half-mile in :51.60.
Red Ruby missed a scheduled start in the Grade 1 $600,000 Alabama Stakes on Aug. 18 at Saratoga Race Course in New York due to a leg injury. The Alabama was won by Eskimo Kisses, who broke her maiden on Feb. 1 at Oaklawn.
Multiple Oaklawn stakes winner Marquee Miss recorded a half-mile bullet workout of :47.20 on Sept. 5 at Arlington Park in Illinois. Marquee Miss won an Aug. 24 allowance race at Indiana Grand in her last start.Sports on 09/14/2018
