Arkansas golf teammates qualify for U.S. Open

FAYETTEVILLE -- The University of Arkansas women's golf team had three student-athletes earn spots in the 2018 U.S. Women's Open Championship on Monday.

Juniors Kaylee Benton and Dylan Kim tied for first place in Irving, Texas, while junior Maria Fassi finished second in the Houston qualifier.

Teammates stick together, and that was certainly the case at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving on Monday. The duo of Benton and Kim finished shooting 4-under 138's with Kim going 70-68 and Benton carding 68-70.

Benton and Kim combined for 16 birdies with three coming on hole 18 of the course.

ANNIKA Award finalist Maria Fassi played to a 1-under 143 with rounds of 69-74 to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open. Playing at The Deerwood Country Club in Houston, the Razorback junior finished second to make the cut.

The ANNIKA Award is presented annually to the top female collegiate golfer. The recipient is chosen by a panel of collegiate golfers, coaches and members of the golf media.

Fassi had five birdies and two eagles in 36 holes of play.

This year's U.S. Women's Open takes place at Shoal Creek Club, in Shoal Creek, Ala. The tournament is scheduled for May 31 through June 3.

Fassi moved to the top spot in the ANNIKA Award Watch List after her come-from-behind win at the NCAA Austin Regional. She was previously No. 2 on the list, but now leads UCLA's Lilia Vu, who held the lead for several weeks.

Kim is also on the list at No. 14.

The third-ranked Arkansas women's golf team won the program's first NCAA Regional title and advanced to the national championships to be played May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
