Haralson receives GAC pitcher's honor


ARKADELPHIA -- Henderson State pitcher Bryant Haralson was named the Great American Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday for his performance against Northwest Missouri on Saturday at Clyde Berry Field.

The weekly award marks Haralson's seventh GAC honor, most in the league, after receiving the award six times last season. Haralson was also the GAC Pitcher of the Year a season ago.

The senior from Atkins pitched 7 2/3 innings Saturday, striking out 9 batters in a 5-2 victory for Henderson (3-3) over the Bearcats (1-5) in the HSU Invitational. Haralson retired the first 13 batters he faced before surrendering a walk in the fifth inning.

Northwest Missouri picked up its first hit off of Haralson in the eighth inning, then manufactured two runs by taking advantage of a pair of walks.

Haralson has worked 14 innings this season and has struck out 16 batters giving him 130 career strikeouts, which ranks 10th in Henderson history.

The other pitcher nominees were Cooper Cantwell, junior, Southwestern Oklahoma State; David Gustafson, senior, Southern Nazarene; Michael Harrison, senior, Arkansas-Monticello; Cody Nitson, senior, Southeastern Oklahoma State; Tanner Smith, junior, Harding; Thomas Shroder, junior, Oklahoma Baptist; Jacob Stroder, senior, Southern Arkansas; Walker Withrow, senior, Southeastern; and Nolan Withrow, junior, Arkansas Tech.

The GAC Baseball Player of the Week was Garrett Dodd, a senior at Arkansas-Monticello. Also nominated were Austin Cooper, senior, Southern Nazarene; Juan Gonzalez, senior, Oklahoma Baptist; Grant Guest, senior, Harding; Daschal Johnson, sophomore, Northwestern Oklahoma State; Alex Pimental, junior, Southwestern; Jacob Richardson, senior, Southern Arkansas; Travis Spinney, senior, Southeastern; and Mark Vaughn, senior, Arkansas Tech.
