LITTLE ROCK -- Little Rock police have released the names of a man killed and two officers injured during a weekend shooting and vehicle crash.
The Little Rock Police Department said in a statement Monday that one of the officers, Brittany Gunn, was off duty when she shot James Hartsfield, 28, as he sped toward a brick wall on Saturday. Gunn was in uniform working security for a parking lot at the time.
Police said Gunn approached Hartsfield's vehicle because it appeared he was drinking from a bottle. Police said she stopped the car, ordered him out of the vehicle and called for backup.
"The driver refused to comply with Officer Gunn's commands and a physical altercation ensued," according to the statement.
Investigators said Hartsfield sped forward while Gunn was inside the vehicle and the other officer, Nicholas Smith, tried to remove Hartsfield from the vehicle. Police said Hartsfield suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. Police didn't say if a liquor bottle was found at the scene.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Police said Gunn and Smith were treated at a hospital for multiple abrasions and contusions.State Desk on 10/11/2017
